A total of five ferries, two cruise liners and one ro-ro vessel have been appointed winners of the ShipPax Award. The most impressive ships delivered during 2008 were announced today, on the first day of the yearly Ferry Shipping Conference while en route from Marseille to Bastia on board the Napoleon Bonaparte.
The prize is a prominent one, not least because the jury knows the ins and outs of all the ships that have been taken under consideration. The jury"s solid knowledge of the trends in the passenger shipping industry is another cornerstone of the award, which was established in 1999.
A more detailed presentation of the winning vessels is attached as a pdf file. There are fewer categories than usual this year, due to the jury"s focus on major achievements in the industry. The number of winners is dependent on the number of innovative solutions that have been noticed during the year. Only those owners, yards and designers that have challenged themselves and come up with something new are awarded.
One ship, the Celebrity Solstice, receives two awards this year. One is in recognition of the investments in energy conservation; the other is for the innovative interiors of the ship. The new MSC Fantasia is also awarded for her interior.
The Italian ferry Cruise Roma and the Norwegian ferry Superspeed 1 get awards for ?Ferry Concept?, while the conversion of the Greek Elyros is also noticed. The exterior of the Swedish-flagged VIKING XPRS and the interior of the Spanish Martin I Soler are awarded.
On the ro-ro side, the City Of Hamburg gets an award for her special flexibility on the vehicle decks.
