The remains of all nine seafarers missing in the fire onboard the tanker Formasaproduct Brick have been found.
The Malaysian Marine Police said the bodies of all nine missing seafarers were found onboard the fire ravaged product tanker at the weekend. The nine crew were unable to escape explosions and fire when the product tanker collided with the panamax bulker Ostende Max in the Malacca Strait on August 18 evening.
Due to the intensity of the fire in some cases only bones were found. The remains have been taken to hospital near Port Dickson for identification.
It took salvors and rescuers over 30 hours to put out the fire. The tanker was carrying a 58,000 tonne cargo of naphtha at the time of the accident which ignited as a result of the collision.
Sixteen other crew onboard the tanker escaped with their lives in liferafts or by jumping overboard and were resuced by a passing container vessel.
Investigations by the Malaysian authorities into the cause of the collision continue.
