Alert on high seas
The Intelligence reports on possible terror attacks on oil wells and Single Point Mooring (SPM) across the country have made coastal security agencies across the country, including Kochi, to intensify security measures on the high seas. The BPCL Kochi Refinery, which the SPM in Kochi belongs to, has strengthened their internal security cover.
The Intelligence agencies had reported that Pakistanbased terror groups may target oil wells and SPM facilities where ships offload crude oil for transportation to the mainland through pipes. Following the alert, Central security agencies had asked the Navy and the Coast Guard to intensify patrolling on the high seas.
Though officials from the Navy and the Coast Guard in Kochi denied any special alert they said that security measures have been taken on the high seas. ?Navy and Coast Guard ships are patrolling off the Kerala coast on a regular basis." "We have taken all efforts to ensure the security of vital installations including oil wells and SPM,"" said officials.
Sources said that the issue was discussed by various coastal security agencies.
Kochi had received an alert recently from the Union Home Ministry of a possible terror attack. Following the alert commandos were deployed in the city to ensure the security of Jewish Synagogue in Mattanchery and St Francis Church at Fort Kochi. A commando force from the state police is camping in the city for the last few days following the alert.
