Ananda hands over cargo vessel to Danish co today
Ananda Shipyard and Slipways Limited is going to hand over Stella Moon, an ocean-going multi-purpose cargo vessel built for export, to the Danish company in the port city of Chittagong today.
Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan would be present as the chief guest at a handover ceremony at Chittagong Dry Dock at 9:30am.
Ananda Shipyard has built the 81.35 metres vessel with 13.15 metres breadth and 6.20 metres depth and 4.65 metres draught for Stella Shipping of Denmark for $8.2 million.
Ananda Group Chairman Dr Abdullahel Bari would hand over the 2,900-DWT (Dead Weight Tonnage) capacity cargo vessel to Capt Michael Sorensen, a representative of the owning company.
The Ananda authorities at a press conference yesterday stressed the need for policy and structural development under the government initiative to help shipbuilding industry flourish to earn several hundred crore dollars annually and turn it into the country's main export earners.
Addressing the programme at Chittagong Press Club, Bari said if flourished properly, this sector could also save foreign currencies and create huge employment opportunities in the country.
Mentioning easy availability of skilled labour, he said labour cost comprises only some 15 percent of the total cost to build a ship here.
Bari said out of over 15 shipyards from seven different countries, Ananda Shipyard became technically qualified and financially lowest in the tender floated for building a hydrography survey boat and an oil tanker for Bangladesh Navy.
Ananda has so far earned $60 million (Tk 420 crore) through exporting ships while it has orders for manufacturing and exporting 28 more ships, including 10 for Germany, with a total contract value of $454.6 million (Tk 3,82 crore), he added.
Afruja Bari, managing director of Ananda Group, said Stella Moon is the eighth vessel Ananda Shipyard is exporting since May 15, 2008 when it exported Stella Maris to the same Danish company.
?Since the leading shipbuilding countries like Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam and Singapore have already got advance booking for shipbuilding up to 2010 and showing reluctance to take new orders, the prospective buyers are now looking for Bangladesh and other alternative countries.?
Executive Director Tariqul Islam, Director Fahmida Bulbul and Director Abdullah Nahid Nigar also spoke at the press conference.
