Another death in Tuzla's shipyards
Worker Ali Ihsan Cam, 31, lost his life on Sunday in fall at a shipyard in Istanbul's Tuzla district.
The Sedef Shipyard in the Tuzla district was the scene of the most recent accident, but the area's shipyards have recently been the focus of criticism in the wake of a rash of deadly mishaps linked to unsafe working conditions.
Cam fell from a platform early on Sunday at the shipyard and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead from a cerebral hemorhage.
Sedef Shipyard General Director Cumhur Kuter issued a written statement on Sunday, claiming Cam had been "in a rush to join his friends on a tea break and preferred to use the catwalk instead of the stairs."
The statement continued: "He lost his balance and fell. We immediately took him to the hospital but unfortunately he passed away."
Cam's death has increased the number of workers who've lost their lives in work-related accidents at Tuzla's shipyards to eight since the beginning of this year.
More than 50 fatal accidents have occurred in the last seven years at the shipyards, largely due to electric shocks and falls from platforms.
