Arkas provides hands-on education training to Marine Engineers
The Arkas Marine Engineering Training Center at the Dokuz Eylül University School of Maritime Business and Management opened on May 10th, 2007.
The Dokuz Eylül University School of Maritime Business and Management’s (DIYYO) Arkas Marine Engineering Training Center donated by Arkas has recently opened its doors.. The goal of the center is to equip Marine Engineering Officers with professional skills through hands-on education and training.
At the opening ceremony, ?smet Y?lmaz, Turkish Minister of Transportation, emphasized the fact that investment in the area of education will have the greatest impact on giving Turkey a bright future. Y?lmaz said, “We are convinced that shipping is a sector that drives the economy and we have supported it. Shipping companies have given us everything we expected of them. As a result, this sector is experiencing a golden age of peace, prosperity and cooperation.” Lucien Arkas, Chairman of the Arkas Board of Directors, who also spoke at the opening ceremony, stated that that private sector must cooperate with universities in order to train the qualified personnel which the industry needs. Arkas said, “This is the way to train human resources according to the needs of the industry. It means that we will avoid wasting the nation’s income and human resources. Every student graduating from this school will have a job waiting for them. It is difficult to find any other school in Turkey where that is true.”

A first for Turkey
The Arkas Marine Engineering Training Center is a successful example of cooperation between universities and the private sector, making it the one of the first of its kind in Turkey.
The Marine Engineering Department of the School of Maritime Business and Management will provide dynamic education for students in a building that is equipped with laboratories, simulators and workshops, enabling them to understand the rapid developments in the maritime industry. Students graduating from the center will receive a Marine Engineering Diploma.
Güldem Cerit, Faculty Director of D?YYO, who spoke at the opening, voiced her gratitude to Lucien Arkas and the Arkas family for providing their institution with such a facility and for making a contribution to the education of trained sailors in Turkey.
