Asphalt tanker leaves Baltimore after 10 month detention

Asphalt tanker leaves Baltimore after 10 month detention
The US Coast Guard (USCG) announced that 2009 built tanker Asphalt Trader has been released after being held for 10 months over various safety discrepancies.

Owned by Greece based Eurotankers, the 367 foot vessel departed Baltimore after passing muster with a three person examination team from the Coast Guard Sector Maryland National Capital Region Port State Control branch.

The ship, previously named Newlead Granadino and owned by Greece's Newlead, had failed compliance inspections in September 2016, leading to its detention.

Coast Guard officials worked with the ship's crew and owners to make sure it met conditions to earn a certificate verifying it is in safe condition.

Among the problems detected in the original inspection were flaws in the ship's fire detection and suppression systems, emergency power and life saving systems.
