Boxship fends off pirate attack
Containeship Africa Star evaded capture after being attacked by Somali pirates yesterday morning, EU Navfor has verified.
According to Israeli media sources, the incident involving the 1988-built, 26,152 dwt Africa Star entailed an exchange of fire between the pirates and private security guards, with no casualties ensuing.
According to Lloyd's List Intelligence, the vessel is associated with Therica Shipping of Hong Kong.
However, neither EU Navfor nor two private security contractors contacted by Lloyd's List were immediately aware of subsequent incident. Andrew Mwangura of the Mombasa-based Seafarers' Assistance Programme said that rumours of an attack were circulating in the region, but that he had no further details.
