A Royal Navy frigate and a Greek rescue helicopter has rescued the eleven-strong crew of the 1974-built, St Vincent and Grenadines-flag cargo ship Afrodite S which was taking in water in the Mediterranean between Crete and Cyprus.
HMS Monmouth’s helicopter and the Greek aircraft airlifted the crew off the 2,760 gt vessel after its cargo of cement shifted.
The Afrodite S was reported to be close to sinking in the gale force conditions.
