Cargo ship sinks during storm
Ship being repaired in a Montenegro port partly submerged. A general cargo vessel has partly sunk during a storm at the Montenegro port of Bijela.
The incident occurred on Friday
The ship, the MEXICA was being repaired at the Adriatic Shipyard, with Greek firm Zambounis & Associates overseeing the work for the vessels managers, given in Equasis as Reefer & General of Athens.
The elderly 10,000 grt vessel, built in 1984, is believed to be in a 'stable' condition but there are worries over possible pollution from the ship's fuel tanks.
However the shipyard, quoted in Balkan Insight, said that any risk was 'theoretical' and the only way the vessel would completely submerge would be if another big storm were to hit her.
The shipyard were waiting to hear from the maritime authorities and were unable to move the vessel until they did.
