Cargotec has been active in co-operative work and research around the Baltic Sea since the beginning of 2007 and presented its commitment to concrete action on 19 May 2009. Cargotec wishes to promote understanding about the need to prevent climate change, which also has an effect on the health of the Baltic Sea.

Cargotec is defining environmental targets for different phases of the supply chain and steps for implementation have already begun. They start with the purchase and logistics of incoming components and end with final products and their appropriate use.
According to Mikael Mäkinen, President and CEO of Cargotec, the company's commitment is demonstrated by its actions: "Over the last year we emphasized sustainability in the products that we offer, for example, the launch of an electronic shuttle carrier and electric cranes for bulk carriers. We have also improved our training services for customers, including training for more economical driving that reduces fuel consumption. These are part of a larger EcoService concept, which is currently being developed.

"We have started to build a new assembly factory in Poland, where we will have a pellet heating solution and are studying alternative energy sources for electricity. We have worked together with our Product Supply's assembly units to set out the most important actions for each unit with regard to energy-efficiency and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions."
