CMA CGM Giants to Run on LNG

CMA CGM Giants to Run on LNG
CMA CGM becomes the first shipping company to choose liquefied natural gas fuel for its biggest ships.

CMA CGM Group announced it will equip its nine new ultra-large 22,000 TEU containerships due to be delivered from 2020 with liquefied natural gas (LNG) engines, a first for the industry.
By choosing LNG, the CMA CGM Group goes beyond current and future regulations that limit the sulphur cap to 0.5 percent starting in 2020.
According to CMA CGM, the use of LNG will yield significant benefits compared to heavy fuel oil, including up to 25 percent less carbon dioxide emissions, 99 percent less sulphur emissions, 99 percent less fine particles and 85 percent less nitrogen oxides emissions. Moreover, the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI), which measures a ship’s environmental footprint, is improved by 20 percent compared to ships propelled solely by fuel oil, CMA CGM said.
The new ultra large containerships will be LNG-powered, though a small percent of marine gas oil will only be used for the ignition in the combustion chamber.
Rodolphe Saadé, CMA CGM Group CEO, stated, “We have made the bold decision to equip our future 22,000 TEUs vessels with a technology firmly focused on the protection of the environment. By choosing LNG, CMA CGM confirms its ambition to be a leading force in the industry in environmental protection by being a pioneer in innovative and eco-responsible technologies.”
Between 2005 and 2015, the CMA CGM Group cut CO2 emissions per container transported per kilometer by 50 percent and plans to further reduce its CO2 emissions by 30 percent between 2015 and 2025.
