Two shipping consortia that provide services between northeast Asia, Brisbane and New Zealand said today they are cutting capacity on the route by combining their two loops.

They said the combination of loops will take place immediately because of what they called the ?deteriorating market situation?.

Hamburg Süd"s Asia ? Australia/New Zealand Service (in which Hapag-Lloyd is a slot charterer) will combine with the service provided between Cosco Container lines and ICS (MOL and NYK with Maersk Line as slot charterer) to create a weekly fixed day service with expanded port coverage in Asia and New Zealand.

The new service will deploy six modern 3,000 to 3,500 TEU vessels. Hamburg Süd and Cosco will each provide two ships, while MOL and NYK contribute one apiece.

To take account of customer demand for more reefer capacity ? especially from New Zealand to northeast Asia ? all six vessels feature 500 reefer plugs.

The new service has the following port rotation: Auckland, New Plymouth, Nelson (fortnightly), Wellington (fortnightly), Lyttelton, Napier, Tauranga, Tokyo, Kobe, Busan, Shanghai, Yantian, Hong Kong, Brisbane and back to Auckland.

Service to and from Brisbane will be offered exclusively by Hamburg Süd.

The partners in the new consortium said they will also provide a peak-season extra-loader program between New Zealand and the northeast Asian reefer markets to ensure that all refrigerated trade volumes will be accommodated.
