Efforts by Italy-based classification society RINA to provide better services to Greek shipowners have resulted in the RINA-class Greek-owned fleet tripling in size recently. And RINA expects that to grow further following the entry into service of a Plan Approval Centre at its Piraeus office and a commitment to further strengthen co-operation through its Greek subsidiary, RINA Hellas. That was the message which many Greek owners and members of the Greek shipping community heard when they attended a reception at the Italian Embassy, hosted by the Italian Ambassador Gianpaolo Scarante.
Those present included representatives of the many companies to which RINA HELLAS provides services, which span from ship classification to technical assistance and certification.
In his welcome speech Ugo Salerno, RINA CEO, highlighted the long and fruitful relations between Greece and Italy throughout history. He put that into the modern context and showed how RINA offers a wide range of services, especially to shipping, where Greece enjoys a high profile thanks to the number of ships operated by Greek owners, and RINA is able to offer the experience of one of the oldest class societies in the world.
Salerno welcomed many members of the RINA Hellenic Technical and Advisory Committees who attended the reception. These committees have been set up by RINA to support the activity of its Greek office, and Salerno thanked them for their support. That has been one of the key reasons that RINA has been able to tailor its services to meet the specific needs of Greek owners.
The RINA Group has been present in Greece since 1986. Today Registro Italiano Navale (HELLAS), soon to be renamed RINA Hellas, provides services to both the maritime and shore-based industries of Greece, including ship and yacht classification, certification, technical assistance and engineering support.
RINA Sp A is the holding company of Registro Italiano Navale, founded in Genoa in 1861, and is one of the oldest classification societies and one of the ten most important in the world. Throughout its history, RINA has progressively diversified its activities, transferring the skills acquired and consolidated in the marine industries to other sectors, covering quality, environmental and product management system certification, social accountability certification and advanced services for industry.
