Fincantieri launches Indian Navy tanker.
ITALIAN state shipbuilder Fincantieri launched the first of two-fleet tankers it is building for the Indian Navy at its Muggiano yard on Friday.
The 175 m supply and logistical support vessel, which is due for delivery later this year, has capacity for 250 passengers and is fitted with two 10,000 kW diesel engines, giving it a maximum speed of 20 knots. It is equipped to refuel four vessels at a time.
The two-ship order continues a burgeoning relationship with India, which it views as a strategic market. It has recently opened a representative office in New Delhi.
Over the last six years, Fincantieri has contributed to the construction of India"s indigenous aircraft carrier and delivered an oceanographic vessel to the the Madras-based National Institute of Ocean Technology.
The latest launch reaffirms the company"s growing involvement in the military market, the one shipbuilding segment in which orders continued to come in through the economic crisis.
