Singapore’s Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it dispatched around 70 firefighters to the shipyard around 3:30pm yesterday when a fire broke out onboard the Sembcorp Marine-owned vessel, Elite Prosperity.
SCDF needed 7 hours to get the fire under control, battling it with both interior firefighting and within the confines of the decks while also providing external boundary cooling to keep the blaze from spreading.
The fire was finally put out around midnight last night, with 3 fire engines, 3 red rhinos, 2 firebikes, 1 ambulance, 1 unmanned firefighting machine, 6 support vehicles and 2 marine firefighting vessels used in the process.
There was no one onboard the ship at the time of the fire breaking out and no shipyard workers were injured.A Sembcorp Marine told Splash that operations at the yard are unaffected and the company is now working with the authorities to investigate the cause of the incident.
The fire is the second incident of note for Sembcorp Marine this year. In March a Noble Corporation jackup rig was damaged at Jurong shipyard when a shipyard crane boom operating near the rig collapsed.
In 2012 around 90 workers were injured, 22 of them seriously, when a jackup rig tilted to one side at Jurong Shipyard.
