The fishing trawler Kapitan Chernov caught fire in Sea of ​​Okhotsk off the western coast of Kamchatka, Russia.

The fire started in the superstructure of the ship and flames engulfed the whole accommodation area. The crew tried to extinguish the fire, but it continue spreading to the whole ship. The accident was reported to local authorities and all non-essential crew was evacuated by the rescuers. The rest of the crew continue firefighting for several hours, but due to high danger for their safety the last six seamen, including captain, were transferred on board of the reefer Limansky and taken to shore. The fishing trawler Kapitan Chernov is anchored on 7 nautical miles off Kamchatka, but according to local authorities the situation is complicated the vessel might be lost.

“Last six people, including the captain, from fishing ship Kapitan Chernov were evacuated aboard the reefer ship Limansky”, said the head of the Marine Rescue Coordination Sub-Center of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky region, Arthur Rets. “The evacuated sailors feel normal, they do not need medical assistance. For several hours these six sailors tried to extinguish the fire on board of the trawler, but – unsuccessfully. The fire continued to spread. Staying of the people on board was dangerous. A separate part of the crew was evacuated from the ship earlier”, added he.

None of the 27 crew were injured and the decision on the further fate of the vessel should be taken by the shipowner.

The investigation for the root cause of the accident is under way.

The fishing trawler Kapitan Chernov (IMO: 9101015) has overall length of 54.82 m, moulded beam of 10.15 m and maximum draft of 4.50 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 414 DWT and the gross tonnage is 779 GRT. The vessel was built in 1993 by Leninska Koznya Plant in Kiev, Ukraine.
