A freight carrier has spilled an estimated 4.5 metric tonnes of No.2 diesel fuel oil into the water around the Port of Wilmington, Delaware after puncturing its fuel tank, according to the US Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard responded to the spill on Thursday morning after the captain onboard the 623-foot freight carrier the Honor reported a punctured fuel tank.
The hole in the tank has been plugged and the spill contained, the Coast Guard said.
The cause of the spill is under investigation. The EPA says the spilled fuel is not considered hazardous.
