A Hong Kong registered freighter, Tong Hai, carrying 47,000 metric tonnes of iron ore fines was detained at New Mangalore Port after MMD intervened and found the moisture content in iron ore fines alarmingly high. Goa and Mangalore MMD Captain K P Jayakumar confirmed to Express about detaining the cargo vessel on July 18, a day after a freighter M V Asian Forest submerged due to a suspected high Transportable Moisture Limit (TML) nine nautical miles from New Mangalore Port.
Captain Jayamukar told Express that the Hong Kong registered freighter carrying 40,000 metric tonnes of iron fines to China had high Transportable Moisture Limit (TML). Thus the crew of the detained vessel have been draining the water in order to bring down the TML to permissible levels.
Captain Jaya Kumar in Goa told Express when contacted that he had inspected the cargo vessel on Tuesday, the moisture and other issues were still not within the permissible limits. Thus its detention will continue, he added.
