Greenpeace demands grounded bulker be detained in Cebu

Greenpeace demands grounded bulker be detained in Cebu
In the early hours of Monday morning a Panamanian-flagged bulker ploughed into pristine coral reefs off northern Cebu in the central Philippines destroying around three hectares of coral.

The grounding of the Belle Rose took place in a shark sanctuary while en route to southern Cebu.

No oil has leaked from the ship. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is investigating the incident which happened in benign weather conditions.

Greenpeace has demanded the ship does not leave the country until it has paid to rehabilitate the reefs.

The ship is owned by Japan’s Yoko Transportation.
