Icebreakers Race To Save Seal Ships
Canadian Coastguard icebreakers are smashing through a massive expanse of pack ice to try to free about 100 sealing vessels stuck off Newfoundland's northeast coast.
According to officials about 15 vessels are in danger of having ice pierce their hulls.
Local fishermen say the ice conditions are the worst they have seen in more than 20 years.
The Newfoundland part of Canada's controversial seal hunt is the third and largest stage of the hunt.
Brian Penney, a superintendent with the Coastguard in Newfoundland and Labrador, said helicopters could be called in to rescue stranded crews as a northeast wind continues to jam the ice floes together.
