The International Mobile Satellite Organization (IMSO) today announced the outcome of the Twentieth Session of the IMSO Assembly of Parties, held on Malta from 29 September to 3 October 2008, under the Chairmanship of Mr William Azuh of Nigeria.

The Assembly was attended by representatives from fifty-two governments

The International Mobile Satellite Organization (IMSO) today announced the outcome of the Twentieth Session of the IMSO Assembly of Parties, held on Malta from 29 September to 3 October 2008, under the Chairmanship of Mr William Azuh of Nigeria.

The Assembly was attended by representatives from fifty-two Governments as well as by observers from international organizations.

The Assembly was opened by the Hon. Dr Austin Gatt, Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Communications and Mr Efthimios E. Mitropoulos, the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Captain Esteban Pacha-Vicente, the IMSO Director General, today spoke of his pride and pleasure at the important and historic decisions which were taken by the Assembly, and paid tribute to the spirit of compromise and collaboration which prevailed among all participants, resulting in important decisions which will enhance the Organization"s role in ensuring vital distress, safety and security services.

The Assembly also recognized the services to the Organization and to the maritime world of its previous Director, Mr Jerzy Vonau of Poland, who served from 1999 to 2007, by deciding that he should be designated as ?Director General Emeritus of IMSO?.

The major decisions taken by the Assembly were:

? The adoption of amendments to the IMSO Convention, extending IMSO"s oversight to all GMDSS providers recognized by IMO and enhancing IMSO"s role as LRIT Coordinator; these amendments will be provisionally applied with effect from 6 October 2008, pending formal ratification by the requisite number of IMSO Parties

? The approval of relevant practical and financial procedures, in particular the LRIT business and audit plans, to ensure the provision of IMSO"s services in a coordinated, operationally effective, fair and efficient manner.
