THE Indian Navy reportedly foiled an attack on a Slovenian -registered ship the Postojna. on passage from South Korea to Saudi Arabia. It is reported that three fast motorboats approached the vessel but fled when a Indian fired shots. No casualties were reported. Since the beginning of the year, pirates have attacked or tried to attack more than 100 ships off the coast of lawless Somalia on the Horn of Africa and vessels from several navies are in the region to protect shipping.
Meanwhile details have emerged of an incident on Thursday last week when the Indian Navy opened fire on pirates attempting top board a merchant ship, killing two pirates.
The French Navy then apparently arrested tow other suspects and recovered the bodies. The surviving pirate suspects and the two bodies were handed over on Monday to officials in Somalia's semi-autonomous region of Puntland, officials said.
