Russian gas supplies to Turkey from a western pipeline passing through Ukraine have been completely cut as a result of the Moscow-Kiev price row, the Turkish energy minister said on Tuesday. Iran may increase its gas flow.
"We are trying to compensate the cut," Turkish Energy Minister Hilmi Guler was quoted.
He said Turkey has raised supplies of Russian gas delivered via the Blue-Stream pipeline which passes under the Black Sea to 48 million cubic meters (mcm) per day from a previous 40 mcm, and would use liquid natural gas sources as well as natural gas stores.
Turkey has taken precautions to protect against such a situation, and there is no problem for natural gas supplies.
Iran may be able to increase its natural gas supplies to Turkey if a shortfall is created by the cut off of Russian gas supplies, an Iranian embassy source told.
Iran supplies approximately a third of Turkey's gas.
Iran supplies approximately a third of Turkey's gas. Earlier Bulgaria's economy ministry said Russian gas supplies to Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece and Macedonia via Ukraine were stopped at 3:30 am (0130 GMT) Tuesday.
Bulgaria, which relies almost entirely on Russian gas for its needs, will be worst hit as, like Macedonia, it has no access to alternative pipeline routes.
The moves came after Russia and Ukraine agreed yesterday to restart talks on their dispute and as Gazprom warned that Ukraine risks amassing a debt of ?billions of dollars? if the conflict continues.
Russia, which supplies a quarter of Europe"s gas, cut shipments to Ukraine on Jan. 1, in a repetition of a 2006 dispute which also interrupted supplies to Europe.
