Korea Dominates Shipbuilding Market in Q1
Korea widened the gap with China in the shipbuilding market in the first quarter, maintaining its lead for a second straight quarter.
The Ministry of Knowledge Economy said Thursday that Korean shipbuilders racked up orders for nearly 1.54 million CGTs (compensated gross tons) in the first three months of 2010, up 195 percent from the same period of last year.
Korea captured 51.5 percent of the global market, compared to 26.6 percent for China, which won orders for 796,000 CGTs.
Bulk carriers (29 units) accounted for 65 percent of Korea"s total orders and tankers 25 percent (23 units). Korea won no orders for container ships and LNG ships in the first three months of this year.
