The Chinese largest port takes the leading position for third consecutive year. The growth of container turnover of the port of Shanghai compared to 2015 was 1.6%. The top 10 positions of the world’s busiest container ports in 2016 remained unchanged from 2015. The second position of the rating is occupied by the port of Singapore, having turnover by the end of the year at 30.9 million TEU (-0.1%). In third place is the port of Shenzhen in China with turnover of 23.98 million TEU (-0.9%).
The port of Hong Kong reduced container transshipment by 9.7%, to 20.07 million TEU, has lost the 4th position of the rating and dropped to the 5th, while the Ningbo-Zhoushan port in China rose from the 5th to the 4th position after increasing the container throughput by 6.1% to 20.63 million TEU. The port of Guangzhou in China increased container turnover by 7.3% to 17.59 million TEU, which allowed the port to rise from the 8th place by the end of 2014 to the 7th. The Chinese port of Qingdao dropped from 7th to 8th position, having passed 17.44 million TEU (+5.2%).
The Port of Shanghai, located in the vicinity of Shanghai, comprises a deep-sea port and a river port. In 2010, Shanghai port overtook the Port of Singapore to become the world’s busiest container port. Shanghai’s port handled 29.05 million TEUs, whereas Singapore’s was a half million TEU’s behind.
