Maersk Oil Qatar opened on Thursday its new logistics facility here to serve as a base for onshore operations related to the development of the Al Shaheen field, Qatar"s largest offshore oil field.

The company began operations in Qatar in 1992, when an Exploration and Production Sharing Agreement (EPSA) was signed with Qatar to develop the Al Shaheen Field in Block 5, offshore Qatar.

Maersk Oil Qatar"s 2005 Field Development Plan (2005 FDP) encompasses the drilling of more than 160 production and water injection wells over a six year period as well as construction and offshore installation of 15 new platforms with accommodation and production facilities.

An opening ceremony was held together with Venture Gulf Group, to mark the start-up of operations at the base, situated in Salwa Industrial Area.

Together with Qatar Petroleum (QP), Maersk Oil Qatar is developing the Al Shaheen field, under one of the oil industry"s most complex development plans. The building of the new 34,000 sq metre base has been necessary to cope with the extensive logistics demands of such a large scale operation. An effective logistics operation is an integral part of running such a significant offshore operation.

Maersk Oil"s decades of experience have been used to build a facility designed to enable operational efficiency.

The company has implemented many design modifications to minimise problems with dust and heat, which are problematic in the region.

Maersk Oil Qatar Logistics General Manager Morten Westin said: ?This marks another successful and important milestone for the company, in our ambitions to achieve operational excellence in our operations here in Qatar.?

Westin also said the company will now operate from this new logistics facilities as a one-stop-shop which combines several facilities that were previously scattered in different places.
