MARITIME'S STUDENTS MEET WITH TURKISH PRESIDENT
It"s not every day that SUNY Maritime students meet with a head of state. However, in late September, 2008, nine Turkish students who are enrolled in a dual diploma program at SUNY Maritime College and the ITUMF (Istanbul Technical University Maritime Faculty) did just that.
After donning their dress Maritime uniforms, Omer Ozmilli, Ali Besin, Abdullah Hidir, Cigdem Atbas, Nuh Bora Canan, Caglar Aslan, Ahmet Karakas, Serdar Ulutas, Engin Kasa, traveled from Maritime to the Turkish Consulate in New York City, for a private reception with Turkish President Abdullah Gul.
President Gul, who was in New York for meetings at the United Nations, hosted a reception later that afternoon for Turkish citizens living in the New York area. The Turkish President spent time and ?talked to each of us,? the students reported. ?He asked about our hometowns in Turkey and then told us of his first travel to Istanbul to register at the University in 1969.?
President Gul told the students that he was pleased that they were pursuing a maritime education and said that in his student days, had hoped to attend the ITU Maritime College in Istanbul, but was dissuaded by a school official because he did not live in a coastal community! He went on to attend Istanbul University.
President Gul is Turkey"s 11th president and was elected to the Turkish presidency in 2007.
