MISC is planning to launch a new intra-Asian container service targetting the Halal shipping market.
The Malaysian shipowner is looking to launch its second serice targeting the Halal goods market following the success of its Halal Express Service which connects China through Southeast Asia to the Middle East, according an industry source.
Halal goods are those certified as having been approved for consumption or use by Muslims, a concept which in recent years has increasingly been applied to the shipping of the goods as well as their production.
This includes the storage, handling and containers the goods are carried in.
The Malaysian company plans to deploy six 4,500 teu capacity vessels on the new service. MISC is reported to be scouting the charter market tonnage in this size range.
According to MISC"s website it only has three vessels in the 3,000 teu to 5,000 teu capacity range.
The port rotation for the new service is yet to be decided.
Earlier this year MISC upgraded its existing Halal service with additional calls including the Indonesian capital Jakarta.
MISC has 41% of its container shipping fleet, totalling 41,400 teu idle.
The shipowner announced in May it would be quitting the Asia ? Europe trades, where it contributed to 7,000 teu vessels to a Grand Alliance service, and focus instead on building its intra-Asia business.
MISC"s liner and logistics business reported a full year operating loss of M$990m ($279.2m) for the financial year ending March 31 this year.
