Good news for Istanbul. The opening of the Baku-Tiflis-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline has reduced the amount of oil transported, allowing the Bosphorus some room to breather.

The opening of the Baku-Tiflis-Ceyhan pipeline has reduced the oil freight load transported through the Bosphorus.

Last year, for the first time a decrease was seen of 100 fewer tankers passing through the Bosphorus.

This year, the reduction of freight transported has already accelerated, with a decrease of 200 tankers seen in the first two months of 2008.

In the year 2007, for the first time the number of tankers passing through the Bosphorus actually decreased compared to previous years.

The decrease continued in the first two months of the year 2008. The number of tankers passing through the Bosphorus was 4,248 in 1996; however, that figure escalated in 2006, reaching 10,154.

In 2007, a decrease of 100 tankers passing through the Bosphorus, compared to 2006 figures, was seen for the first time.

In the first two months of 2008, compared to the year prior, a decrease of 200 tankers has already been seen, lightening the load of freight transported by 20 million tons.
