Moby Dick, a nautical classic that is often called the greatest American novel, will be read out loud in its entirety this weekend aboard the Star of India at the Maritime Museum of San Diego.

Beginning at noon Saturday with the cryptic opening sentence, “Call me Ishamel,” and ending around 2 p.m. Sunday with Capt. Ahab’s death pursuing the great white whale, volunteers will read the book.

The event is open to the public with paid museum admission.

Anyone can read, and sign-ups for 5-minute slots will take place at the ship’s gangway. There will also be celebrity readers.

Food and drink will be available to purchase aboard the ship, and there will be a 10-minute break every three hours.The event celebrates the birthday of author Herman Melville and America’s nautical heritage.

The museum is partnering with Write Out Loud, a San Diego organization that encourages reading out loud to experience great literature.
