Japan's Hitachi LNG Terminal is now in operation

Tokyo Gas inaugurates Hitachi LNG Terminal in Japan

26 March 2016 Saturday 10:28

Tokyo Gas finished construction and started operations of the Hitachi LNG Terminal in the Hitachi Port area of Japan, the company announced Friday.

"Hitachi LNG Terminal is our first LNG terminal, located outside Tokyo Bay for Tokyo Gas," the company said.

In addition, Tokyo Gas has begun the use of the newly constructed high-pressure trunk line - Ibaraki-Tochigi pipeline.

By completing the Ibaraki-Tochigi Line, Tokyo Gas controls 950 kilometers of the high-pressure pipeline network mainly around the Tokyo metropolitan area, the company said.

In order to meet the future growth of Japan's gas demand toward 2020, the company began the construction of the Hitachi LNG Terminal and Ibaraki-Tochigi Line in 2012.

In 2011, Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant was hit by a tsunami, leading to the closure of the plant. After the disaster, the country shut down its nuclear reactors for safety inspections amid an intense public demand for the revision of the country's energy policies.

After shutting down its reactors, Japan was heavily dependent on LNG imports mainly from Gulf countries to meet its energy needs.
