Opal and Topaz are the third and fourth vessels in a series of six 4,300 teu containerships being built for Greek shipping firm Dioryx. They were priced at $60m each.
The Subic Bay shipyard, which officially opened last year, now employs 15,000 workers and is expected to take a larger slice of the company"s orderbooks in the coming years.
?Our company expects to achieve its goal of launching more than 15 vessels next year, as the workers will become better familiarised with the shipbuilding processes due to continuous training and enhanced work experience,? HHIC-Phil said in a statement.
Hanjin"s quality assurance director Yoonha Kim said that the construction of an earlier vessel, Turquoise, had been undertaken within the standard Hanjin timetable of 13 months. ?Our goal is to be on par with our South Korean counterparts in terms of efficiency and quality of work.?
Hanjin"s plans to build a second shipyard in the southern part of the Philippines at a cost of $2bn have been put on hold despite the pleadings of the Philippines government to push ahead.
