The Orcelle Fund, a grant-awarding body created by Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics, is looking for innovative new maritime projects to support. The fund provides seed capital for projects developing alternative maritime energy sources and energy-efficient technology. The goal is to find projects with potential commercial viability.

WWL, a global roll-on, roll-off and project cargo carrier, has been a leader in promoting green, environment-friendly business policies and programs for many years. As an extension of these principals, the carrier launched the Orcelle Fund in 2007.

The fund is named for the E/S Orcelle, WWL"s visionary design for the ideal car carrier of 2025. ?E/S? stands for "environmentally sound." The Orcelle uses renewable energy sources such as the sun, wind and waves, as well as fuel cell technology. While a car-carrier like the idealized Orcelle will never be built in its entirety, WWL hopes to see many of its elements brought to life in future vessels.

Orcelle Fund Grants are $25,000 each. Since the program began, two grants have been awarded, according to company spokesman Jon Spampinato. One of these was to support research into a fin propulsion system based on penguin movements.

No firm number of grants are awarded per year; the number of awards depends on the quality of the applications. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis but the company would like interested people to apply by Dec. 15 for consideration during the early first quarter of 2010.
