New deepsea port planned for Pilbara.
WESTERN Australia state, producer of 70% of the nation"s exports to China, has identified a new deepwater port that may be used for iron ore exports from the Pilbara region, writes Michelle Wiese Bockmann.
The port at Anketell, 30 km east of Karratha, may be used by Fortescue Metals Group, China Metallurgical Group and API Management, the Western Australia government said yesterday.
Chinese steelmakers, the world"s biggest buyer of iron ore, are forecast by Rio Tinto Group to consume more iron ore in the next five years than Australia has shipped throughout history.
Operations at the Anketell port may start by 2015, Western Australia"s premier Colin Barnett said.
Fortescue"s Solomon mine, China Metallurgical"s Cape Lambert project and API"s West Pilbara Iron Ore mine could become ?foundation investors? in the port, Mr Barnett said.
The area would include a port with more than 350m tonnes in annual export capacity and an industrial area of more than 1,400 ha, he said.
