Taiwan"s Yang Ming Marine Transport will launch a second East Mediterranean service in the New Year.
The new TIX2 service will be launched in January 2009 in an attempt to widen the company"s service area and reduce transhipment costs.
Yang Ming will deploy two 1,800 teu ships on a weekly service connecting Port Said with Istanbul, Haydarpasa, Izmir, and Ashdod.
TIX2 joins the extant service TIX, which currently deploys a 1,200 teu ship covering Port Said, Ashdod and Mersin.
A Yang Ming spokesperson said that with the two services in operation the company will be able to provide a reliable connection at Port Said with direct services from Asia to the West Mediterranean or to Northern Europe, which carries East Mediterranean transhipment cargo.
?This not only strengthens our feeder network in the East Mediterranean, it also opens up a business opportunity in the area of intra-Europe traffic,? he said.
