London-listed Afren says it has made a major oil find in Kurdish region of Iraq after its Simrit 2 exploration well encountered up to 409 metres (1,341 feet) of net oil pay.

The find was made after Simrit 2 was drilled to test the western end of a Simrit anticline structure  and encountered net oil in Cretaceous, Jurassic and Triassic reservoirs after drilling to a total measured depth of 3,700 metres (12,136 feet).

Hunt Oil operated the well which has not encountered any oil-water contract, Afren stated.

Afren chief executive Osman Shahenshah said Simrit 2 is the second major oil find for the company this year after success at the Okoro East discovery well off south east Nigeria.
