This terminal will add a new activity to Supermaritime’s package of services. For the Zeeland ports, the new terminal will mean an increase in capacity for handling general and project cargo. The new terminal will become operational in the autumn. On the 9-hectare site in the Scaldiahaven, Supermaritime will gain access to 375 metres of quay in total, suitable for ships with a draught of up to 14 metres.
Supermaritime has been active for some time, but currently makes use of the Kloosterboer and Verbrugge terminals. The cargo that is handled there for Supermaritime will now serve as a basis for the expansion of transhipment operations at the new terminal. For handling the ships, Supermaritime will, among other things, make use of Verbrugge’s services. In this connection, Verbrugge will, for example, make cranes available with a maximum lifting capacity of 100 tonnes.
The terminal will be operated by Supermaritime Nederland b.v., part of the Supermaritime group with its head office in Rotterdam. Businesses within the Supermaritime group have mainly been active, up to now, in Africa and South America, with a wide range of ship and cargo related activities, from freight forwarding and agency services to storage, goods handling and transport.
About Zeeland Seaports
Zeeland Seaports is, as Zeeland port authority, responsible for developing, managing, maintaining and operating the ports of Vlissingen and Terneuzen. The port area is located strategically at the mouth of the Western Scheldt. The deep water and the absence of locks at the seaports of Zeeland Seaports mean excellent nautical access. And thanks to a well functioning network of roads, railways, inland shipping routes and pipelines, Zeeland Seaports has excellent connections with the European hinterland. Due to this strategic location and the good work ethic in this area, the Zeeland ports have developed, in the past forty years, into the third largest seaport in the Netherlands, and since 1980 have even been among the fastest-growing port areas in Europe. The area covers more than 4600 hectares. Zeeland Seaports plays an important role for the regional economy. The port area is home to around 250 companies, which account for 18% of employment in Zeeland.
