Liz Cunningham, the Member for Gladstone, tabled statements from five local fishermen that she said showed reduced catches and increases in sick fish after dredging of the Gladstone Harbour.
The ports corporation’s chief executive, Leo Zussino, says no scientific studies have demonstrated a link but he asked the CSIRO to conduct tests to make sure.
“Now the CSIRO did this study, the CSIRO reported on that study and said there is no elevated levels of dissolved metals around the dredging project and we can’t find a noted scientific paper in the world that connects dredging to disease in fish in an ocean accessed harbour,” he said.
