NYK gets first very large ore carrier
Japan"s Nippon Yusen Kaisha has taken delivery of its first ever 297,000 dwt very large ore carrier after Oita Maru was handed over by Universal Shipbuilding.
The 327m long vessel is the first NYK bulk carrier to be equipped with an electronically controlled engine.
The ship will be chartered to Nippon Steel as part of an eight-year deal between the two companies involving the shipment of 1.2m tonnes of iron ore a year, mainly from Brazil.
NYK said the electronically controlled engine system would optimise combustion efficiency by timing fuel injection and the opening and shutting of exhaust valves. A high level of fuel injection pressure can be maintained even in the low-load range. This improvement reduces the generation of nitrogen oxide, soot, and smoke.
