Ofer Brothers adds to car carrier fleet
Ofer Brothers intends to follow in the footsteps of Rami Unger and become a strategic player in the global car shipping business.
The company recently took delivery of seven new car carriers, built by order over the last four years at the Xiamen shipyards in China.
The seventh carrier dropped anchor in January and was handed over to Ofer Brothers' UK-based shipping fleet management company Zodiac Maritime Agencies Ltd. An unknown number of additional ships will be built for Ofer Brothers at the same shipyard through 2011.
The ships are leased to leading shipping companies worldwide. The latest fleet is likely to be used in the joint venture between Ofer Brothers' holding company Israel Corp., and Chinese car producer Chery Automobile, which are set to begin exports of Chinese cars to the West in 2010.
Ofer Brothers will reportedly take part in this project as well. Automobile sector sources believe that the company that supplies the Chinese car industry with the means to ship vehicles overseas could benefit from strategic contacts with Chinese automobile manufacturers.
