A German warship stopped a suspected pirate mother ship in the Indian Ocean that may have been involved in attacking merchant vessels, the European Union"s anti-piracy fleet said.

The Karlsruhe halted the skiff yesterday morning, the EU"s Maritime Security Center said on its Web site today. Mother ships are normally used as staging posts for smaller vessels to attack merchant shipping.

The skiff"s four crew members threw items into the water and claimed to be fishermen, though they had no nets, the center said. The vessel also carried articles that could be used in pirate attacks, it said. The four individuals were released.

The Karlsruhe was investigating an area where attacks took place on two merchant vessels, the U.S.-flagged Harriette and the M/V Jo Cedar, which was sailing under the Dutch flag.
