The 25 vehicles are all off-road yard tractors and some of them have a claimed zero-emission performance level.
Some are powered by electricity and some by liquefied natural gas (LNG). They will be deployed at the Everport marine terminal.
A portion of the grant money – around $1m – will be allocated to equip 100 drayage trucks with smart technology that helps lower emissions by reducing time spent on the road and by making the flow of containers at the port more efficient, which reduces congestion and fuel consumption.
Both the tractor test and the smart technology trial will last three years.
The Port of Los Angeles is the busiest in North America by container volume and cargo value.
