The vessel was en route under ballast from Aarhus, but on Wednesday early morning during passage of the canal the engine room was engulfed by flames. The crew raised the alarm and the pilot on board stopped the vessel on the north side of the canal near Schwartenbek, German media reported. The accident was reported to local authorities and traffic center of the canal alarmed the fire brigade and blocked the section for shipping. The crew succeeded to get the flames under control with powder extinguishers, but at the scene arrived tugs and firefighters from Suchsdorf. The fire was completely extinguished for about two hours shortly after 1 am on May 17.
The product tanker Oraness was towed by the tugs Bulk and Stein to the Nordhafen, where was docked for special survey and safety inspection. Also will be held investigation of the water protection police and the Berufsgenossenschaft traffic inspectors, which will estimate the cause of the fire.
There were no reported injuries and no water pollution during the accident.
The product tanker Oraness (IMO: 8416786) has overall length of 79.00 m, moulded beam 13.00 m and maximum draft of 4.50 m. The vessel has deadweight of 2,586 DWT and gross tonnage of 1,804 GRT. The product tanker Oraness was built in 1985 by Tille Scheepsbouw in their yard in Netherlands.
