Nordic Heavy Lift orders record breaking crane vessel

Nordic Heavy Lift (NHL) subsidiary Avonway has ordered a crane vessel with a record 5,000 tonne single mast lifting capacity from Singapore's Sembawang Shipyard.

The $221 million contract with Sembawang requires the complete engineering, construction, outfitting and commissioning of a 13,500 tonnes new hull to be built in China, into a DP 3 heavy lift crane vessel with a 220-400 men accommodation capacity equipped with a 5,000 tonnes heavy lift Huisman mast crane.

The contract involves carrying out detailed engineering on the basic design package, construction of the bare steel hull in China, complete detailed 3-D model engineering, systems outfitting and commissioning in Singapore and the installation of the owner supplied 5,000 tonnes crane.

The vessel is scheduled to be delivered in March 2010.

Sea of Solutions, part of the Offshore Ship Designers Group, was responsible for both the concept and basic design of the monohull vessel, which has the largest single mast crane ever installed on a vessel.

Huisman-Itrec designed and will construct the 5,000 tonne crane. The crane vessel is scheduled to enter service in March 2010.

The enormous single mast crane will reach approximately 150 m above the deck when topped up and will be the largest crane of this type yet built.

Today's deepwater oilfield construction projects demand high transit speeds and good DP capabilities when on station.

The vessel's transit speed of 14 knots is achieved by installing two propulsion thrusters of 5.5 MW each. These combined with four 3.2 MW retractable thrusters and a 2.5 MW bow thruster give the vessel DP3 class. Provision for a future 8-point mooring system is built into the design.

Main dimensions of the vessel are:

Loa 180.9 m
Lpp 170.1 m
Beam 46.2 m
Depth (molded) 16.1 m
Draft (operational) 7.0 - 11.0 m
Installed power 6 x 5,765 kW

The 5000 tonne Heavy Lift Mast Crane is a typical and proven Huisman design, with the following main specifications:

Capacity over the stern 5,000 mt at 34 m
Capacity revolving 4,000 mt at 41 m
Mast height 82 m
Total boom length 120 m
Max radius main hoist 79 m
Max radius aux hoist 109 m
Max radius whip hoist 122 m
