NEGOTIATIONS are underway with the hijackers the UN-chartered, St Vincent and Grenadines-flag general cargo ship hijacked off Somalia. Armed pirates boarded the ship last month after it had delivered 1,800 tonnes of food aid.
The 1976-built ship, operated by Mombasa-based Motaku Shipping was initially anchored within territorial waters with its crew of 12 Kenyans and Sri Lankans still on board. The authorities in the semi-autonomous province of Puntland arrested four pirates when they came ashore, leaving four on board.
The vessel then sailed, apparently south, but is now reported to be off Eyl. The owner says it has been in touch with the crew who are “safe”.
