Over 350 members of the maritime community celebrated the outstanding contributions made over the last year for safe, efficient and environmentally friendly shipping at the Seatrade Awards Ceremony Dinner.
Guest of Honour Jim Fitzpatrick MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Department for Transport, presented the awards and Tim Sebastian former BBC foreign correspondent and presenter of HARDtalk hosted the awards ceremony.
The Seatrade Awards programme rewards new ideas and concepts that have proved themselves in early operational use and awarding those at the forefront of new thinking. The independent judging panel chaired by Efthimios Mitropoulos, Secretary-General of the IMO, selected the winners of the 2009 awards.
SEATRADE PERSONALITY 2009
Dr Helmut Sohmen, Chairman, the BW Group was presented with the Seatrade Personality Award for 2009 in recognition of a remarkable career at the helm of the world's outstanding bulk shipping groups, as a leader and innovator in industry affairs over many years and as a strong supporter of education and academic research worldwide.

Yudhishthir Khatau, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Varun Shipping Company Limited was presented with the Seatrade Young Person in Shipping Award for 2009. The Award recognised the strong contribution he has made as President of the Indian National Shipowners Association and active member of its Tonnage Tax Committee, as well as his role on the Board of BIMCO and as the Counsellor for BIMCO 39, the platform for young people in shipping.
