Somali pirates hijack cargo vessel
Somali pirates have seized the 7,561dwt cargo vessel Rak Afrikana some 280 miles west of the Seychelles, according to EU Navfor.
The European Union naval force said that a maritime patrol aircraft spotted the vessel and reported eight people on board, three of them possible pirates, and that the vessel had stopped due to engine problems.
Italian naval vessel Scirocco from Combined Task Force 580 had been dispatched to the position to investigate.
The St Vincent & Grenadines-flagged vessel is owned by Seychelles-registered Rak Africana Shipping from Seychelles, but there was confusion over the number and nationality of the crew.
EU Navfor said the nationality of the 23-strong crew was unknown, but local reports from Kenya said they were Chinese, but this was disputed by the Chinese Marine Search and Rescue Centre, which claimed the crew was a mixture of Indian, Pakistani and Tanzanian.
