South Port picks up MSC call
South Port New Zealand Ltd, operator of Bluff's port, said Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) will start servicing the port weekly from late May.
Vessels on MSC's Capricorn service will call at South Port on a weekly cycle. "The service will deliver an efficient import option from Australia with Fremantle and Melbourne being the last ports visited prior to the Bluff call, the company said. "Continuing up the East Coast of New Zealand the vessels will then link with Singapore opening up all major international markets, including Asia, India, Africa, Europe and North America."
MSC is the second largest container mover in the world. It is privately owned by an Italian family and has a large presence in the Australian market.
South Port was listed on the NZX in 1994 and has Environment Southland, the region's local government environmental agency, as its 66 percent majority shareholder.
