Spotted: Guatemala Welcomes Its Largest Boxship to Date
The 8,600 TEU CSAV Traiguen has become the largest containership to call a Guatemalan port when it arrived at Terminal de Contenedores Quetzal (TCQ) on April 12, 2017.

The ship’s arrival is part of the maiden call of Hapag-Lloyd’s Mediterranean Pacific (MPS) service. The MPS service will begin weekly calls to TCQ in early May, according to APM Terminals.

Owned by the United Kingdom-based shipping company Zodiac Maritime, the boxship features a length of 300 meters and a width of 48.4 meters.

TCQ, which was acquired by APM Terminals in March 2016 while under construction, opened for operations earlier this year, with the first trial vessel call carried out in February.

TCQ, with an annual container throughput capacity of 340,000 TEU, is said to be the largest facility between the port of Lázaro Cardenas in México, and the Panama Canal, on the west coast of Central America. The terminal can handle vessels of up to 9,000 TEU capacity, making it the largest in Guatemala.
